It is quite ironic that when you invest in a washing machine, that the majority of us forget that our washing machines also require a wash! You should keep your washing machine services and clean to protect your investment and to keep your washing machine working.
WHY SHOULD I CLEAN Y WASHING MACHINE? (The nitty gritties)
You might think that putting detergent in your washing machine will actually clean it naturally, but this is not the case. There are many places in a washing machine where water will sit and naturally go off and make your washing machine stink, secondly this water and the drum will collect oil, sweat, dirt, mildew and mould.
HOW TO GIVE YOUR WASHING MACHINE A GOOD CLEAN
BAKING SODA & VINEGAR
Clean the door seals, take some towels, soak them in vinegar and let them lay in the drum of the washing machine, take another towel and wipe vinegar in the seals filters and wipe as much surface area as possible, let the washing machine sit with the towels in for at least 6 hours. Also don't forget to pack the gaskets with towels as well.
Take 750 ml of vinegar and mix it with a cup of baking soda.
Set your washing machine to 90 degrees Celsius
For top loader washing machines we also use our trusty vinegar and baking soda however you place the vinegar in the in the dispenser unit and the baking soda in the softener dispenser unit.
If your item is a top loader you need to run the washing machine for a 2 minutes after doing the above, then let the washing machine sit for a couple hours before resuming the cycle.
Run a cycle with hot water to rinse the machine, if there is still odour and grime repeat the process.
Once you have completed the above processes leave the door open and allow the washing machine to dry.
CLEANING YOUR WASHING MACHINE WITH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE
During this time of covid-19, one of the best methods of cleaning and sanitising your machine is using hydrogen peroxide, hydrogen peroxide is useful for killing virus's bacteria, would sanitisation so you can imagine how clean it will make your machine. Hydrogen peroxide is cheaply and readily available over the counter at most pharmacies.
Select the longest cycle at 90 degrees Celsius.
For front loaders just add one litre of hydrogen peroxide to the drum of the washing machine and let the cycle finish afterwards do a hot water cycle.
With a top loader allow the top loader to fill with water and then add your one litre hydrogen peroxide to the water and like the front loader do a cycle with hot water. In both instances allow the drums to dry with open doors to avoid mould.'
LAST BUT NOT LEAST
CITRIC ACID CLEAN
Citric acid is found in most acidic fruits such as lime and lemon and is an excellent cleaner and de-greaser.
Mix half a cup of citric acid and half a cup of baking soda
Like points 2. and 3. above in using hydrogen peroxide as a cleaner you repeat that same exact process.
